You can manage your organic waste at home through the use of a worm or backyard compost. If you receive curbside pick-up services, you can also put your food and yard waste out for collection on scheduled days.

The Compost Recipe
There are four ingredients necessary to make compost. There are many methods of composting, see more details about worm composting and backyard composting.
Air
The bacteria and worms that live in your compost pile need oxygen to survive and keep in balance.
TIP – Aerate your compost pile weekly by poking holes or mixing the materials in the pile.
Moisture
Microorganisms need water to live. If they dry out, decomposition will not occur.
TIP – Keep the pile as wet as a wrung out sponge.
Green Material
Organic material that is high in nitrogen. These can include fresh grass, fruit peels, and vegetable scraps.
TIP – The microorganisms in your compost pile need a mixture of carbon and nitrogen to survive.
Brown Material
Organic material that is high in carbon. These can include leaves, twigs, and newspaper.
